In the current (February 2018) edition of Decanter Peter Richards MW lists his 30 great new world buys under £30, and the Long Gully Road Ancient Vine Semillon 2015 from David Franz makes the list.

Richards was tasked with picking the 30 best value wines from the ‘new world’ he has tasted recently and the run-down includes wines from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America, Argentina and Chile.

Of the seven Australian wines featured there are three whites, including David Franz’s Long Gully Road Ancient Vine Semillon 2015 which Richards describes as ‘tremendous’.

“A summer evening without a cool glass of Semillon is as bad as breakfast without Vegemite,” he writes. “Ancient vines and shrewd winemaking give a subtle, brooding style that unfurls on the palate with vibrant, spicy, limey intensity.”

The wine scores 92 points, and as Richards comments is one of 30 wines whittled down from a list of over 1,000 contenders. “I just want wines to refresh, delight and inform me,” he says. “Life is too short for tedium or repetitive experiences.”
