Wine from The Knotted Vine stable clearly impressed a number of journalists at last month’s Australia Day tasting in London as a number of titles, including Decanter, The Buyer and The Wine Detective, have written them up.

Decanter.com’s ‘Top Australian wines made from Italian grape varieties’ feature included three Knotted Vine wines, two from Koerner and one from Aphelion.

Koerner’s Pigato Vermentino 2017 was described as “unique, savoury and characterful, boasting delicate orchard fruit, zingy citrus acidity and a weighty palate,” while the Koerner Nielluccio Sangiovese 2016 was “juicy, sappy and textural, with red cherry fruit and lovely weight, showing hints of spice and real floral lift.”

The Aphelion Sagrantino 2015 was labelled “rusty, tangy and impressive.” All three wines scored 92 points.

Koerner’s wines also impressed The Buyer who described the Pigato Vermentino 2017 as “an amazing drop” in its Top 10 best Australia Day wines. There was space in the Top 10 for La Violetta’s ‘Spunk Nat’ too. The 2017 Shiraz-Riesling blend was labelled “fleshy and dense with pink grapefruit and cherryade notes… it really is delicious.”

Sarah Ahmed, aka The Wine Detective, was at the tasting too, and focussed on Grenache in her write-up. “It’s tremendously exciting to see so many different, fine, provocative even, expressions of the grape – how far removed is that from the oft confected and boozy examples of old,” she wrote.

She enjoyed the three Aphelion Grenaches on show. The Pressings Grenache 2016 was “fresh and crunchy, with a tongue-twisting swirl of juicy red fruits”, the Berry Grenache 2016 “lovely delicate spice and florals to its red cherry fruit” and the Bunch Grenache 2016 “more savoury than Berry with pronounced Imperial Leather spice, a herbaceous rasp and Turkish delight/rose petal florals.”

The David Franz Grenache Noir 2015 was highly rated too with an “overwhelming impression of savouriness, with medicinal/chinato dried herbs and a markedly different tannin structure from the other Grenaches.

Ahmed also enjoyed and reviewed the Bilingüe GSM and Ü (Rock Dots) Gewürztraminer-Riesling-Grauburgunder 2017 from La Violetta.
